Faces from a place not yet consumed...

Like an animal that has begun devouring itself, the market has found yet another ecological niche. A company wants to turn a mountain into aluminum wrappers, spray cans and weapons. The Niyamgiri hills, in south Orissa, may be ripped open for consumption.

It is home to Kondhs, an indigenous group of people, listed as a special community under the Indian Constitution. They and the mountains have been inseparably intertwined...streams, plants, animals and humans blending into an interdependent world view.

Looking at the city, as the voice from a community, that wants to be left alone with the mountain that they worship as a god, middle aged Kondh woman, Malari, found living on the traffic snarls, perched on the concrete slabs an idiotic and self-defeating life. She has always believed, like her community, since they have taken care of the ecological space of Niyamgiri, it is their world. This fact cannot be refuted by any company or government. This existed before the company or the facilitating leadership.

Ironically, the Constitution is on the side of the Kondh people, and we are bent upon usurping their fundamental rights to life and religious faith.

The environmental destruction mining by the UK based Vedanta can cause has been highlighted by none other than a committee appointed by apex court itself.

Niyamgiri hills belong to the Dongariya Kondhs but the hand and glove development and profit nexus of the MoEF and the British VAL has today jeopardised not only the lives of these forest people, completely overlooked the disastrous environmental impacts not to mention the loss of elephant corridor, shelter for leopards and is the only known home in Orissa of the rare golden gecko.

Supreme Court committee said that the government had violated its own guidelines by allowing the firm to build the refinery without getting clearance to mine the hills.

The ministry report said “special efforts” would be made to manage and conserve wildlife in the area but how would they achieve to do that in open cast mining I wonder. The senseless raping of the earth and its people must be stopped and money should not have the last laugh.
